Isn’t it amazing all the new and interesting things that have come about as a result of the technological breakthroughs of the past decade or so? We can call people from just about anywhere at just about any time; we can chat with friends without benefit of a telephone (or the frustration of a huge telephone bill); we can send written messages from our phones and carry a computer in the palm of our hand. Well, we can now add one more amazing development to the list of possibilities opened up by the tekkies of the world: blogging.
So, what is the history of blogging? Blogging really existed, I believe, before the term for it came about. Surely, after the development of the Internet, people were writing their opinions and sharing them with others, either through email or through actual posting of content on websites. People were keeping online diaries as well, which is really all blogging actually is.
In 1994, a student at Swarthmore began chronicling his ideas online, and some people consider this to be the first true blog.
In 1997, some websites starting appearing whose sole purpose seemed to be house lists of other websites that people found interesting. These became known as web logs.
In 1999, the term “blog” came about by combining the words “web” and “log.” Some say the new term evolved because “weblog” became “we blog” and then the word “we” was just dropped.
With the turn of the century, “blog” began entering mainstream vocabulary, and it even became an official word and found its way into dictionaries.
Blogging is here to stay, and the uses for it will surely evolve as time continues on. From simply communicating with people who have similar interests as yours, to promoting a charity, to expressing political opinions, to demanding answers from politicians, to sharing ideas with classmates as a learning tool, blogging has come a long way. It is likely evolve even more.
